Rare & Intriguing Selections from Alec’s Cellar…

2006 BFM Abbaye de Saint Bon-Chien
Brasserie Des Franches-Montagnes, Switzerland, 11%
This unfiltered, unpasteurized, limited-edition ale is superb: brown in color yet bright in the mouth, with a bracing, spicy, tart, almost woolly complexity reminiscent of a Belgian lambic. Boldly treading the boundary between port, wine and beer, this unique ale is aged in wooden casks which have been used for several years before to age Burgundy wine. Lacking carbonation, it manages to merge all the complex aromas of a vintage red wine along with the delicate harmony and flavors of the wood.

Marrón Acidifié
The Bruery, California, 8.5%
Joining up with Cigar City Brewing out of Tampa, Florida for their first collaboration effort, this Imperial Oud Bruin was developed from a mutual love of classic Belgian technique blended with modern American ingenuity. Spending over a year in barrels, both bourbon and wine, has left this dark sour ale layered with notes of cranberries, tropical fruits, leather and aged balsamic vinegar, balanced by wood tannins and roasted malt. There’s a fine woody backbone from the barrel aging, and it gives this imperial oud bruin a smooth red wine character throughout.

Oude Lambiek De Cam
De Cam Geuzestekerij, Belgium, 5%
Aged in vats older than 100 years, De Cam’s Oude Lambiek is a blend of unpasteurized 3 year old lambics specially selected by brewer/blender Karel Goddeau for their character and roundness. Still, without a head, Oude Lambiek should be enjoyed like a fine white wine but prized for the wonderful, rare, spontaneously fermented Belgian Ale that it is!

Mikkeller Beer Hop Breakfast
Mikkeller, Denmark, 7.5%
Yet another version of the prized Beer Geek Breakfast Stout, the aroma consists of pine and lemon hops, chocolate, molasses, and coffee. The mouth feel is thick and the taste is chocolaty at first with a molasses weight on the tongue. It dries out on the finish with lemon, pine, and spruce followed by a light coffee after taste with lots of dryness.

Anchorage Lovebuzz
Anchorage Brewing Company, Alaska, 8.0%
Saison brewed with spices and aged in French oak Pinot Noir barrels. A Very drinkable Brett forward saison. Good amount of spices & fruitiness on the palate; somewhat sweet in the finish.

Firestone Walker XV
Firestone Walker, California, 12.5%
As a finished beer, XV is alive with amazing complexity and yet it is quite possibly the most integrated and seamless blend from Firestone yet. Looking at a blend of 8 beers on paper at first looks chaotic and potentially disjointed; however, a closer look reveals and interesting theme: 76% Barley Wine style beers, 19% Stout and 5% Imperial IPA. The game changer this year is the addition of Double Jack to the blend. This beer is unfiltered and unrefined, so there will be a small amount of sediment in the bottom of the bottle. As the beer sits and breathes in the glass, a richer, orange zested, chocolate dusted, vanilla custard character is reveled, so take your time.
